Our multi award winning Year 9 Program engages students in a manner that few schools can match. With a focus on relationships and high expectations each student spends half of their timetable in the Year 9 Centre studying ‘Learning 4 Life’, a unique subject that combines four core subjects: English, Science, Humanities and Health.
Each student is assigned a mentor teacher who steers them through a themed program that covers:
Term 1: ‘Our World’ Sustainability, global citizenship, renewable energy
Term 2: ‘Our Melbourne’ Melbourne’s history pre-Federation, weekly trips to CBD
Term 3: ‘Our Future’: Pathways, university visits, mortgages, careers expos
Term 4: ‘Our Choices’: Brain development, respectful relationships, safe partying.
As part of this program, students are involved in a range of activities designed to help them develop life skills as well as their academic skills and knowledge. These include: Monash University visit, Careers Expo, Year 9 Grampians camp, city trips and Community Connexions.
An important element of our Year 9 Program is the Community Connexions program. This program sees students volunteering for a community group or a school-based community project for a minimum of two hours per week throughout Term 3.
In addition to Learning 4 Life and Mathematics, each student has the opportunity to study eight different electives over the course of Year 9. These subjects allow students to start tailoring their studies to personal interests and their future career pathway. A wide selection of elective subjects in the areas of the Arts, Physical Education, Humanities and Technologies are offered. These options are outlined for students in the Year 9 Handbook
